[edit] Biographical Information

Tom York was with the Troy Haymakers in 1870 and then went on to a long career in the National Association, the new National League, and the American Association.

He was an above-average hitter who played his entire career in the outfield, usually in left field. He was renowned for his defense, which was excellent in his early years. His best year with the bat was 1878, when he led the league in total bases, was second in slugging, and led the league in triples.

York managed Providence for parts of two seasons, including 1881. Although he and the team did well in 1881, he was replaced in 1882 when George Wright was lured to play shortstop and his brother Harry Wright lured to manage.
