Tom Thurberg was drafted in the 1st round of the 1976 amateur draft by the New York Mets. An outfielder, he struggled with the bat in 1976-1977, hitting a cumulative .210 in the low minors while leading the 1977 Midwest League in outfield assists and errors. He was converted to a pitcher in 1978 and reached AAA in 1981, but never made the majors.
