Tom Sunkel was 29 when World War II started, married, and 4F due to blindness in one eye. He spent the 1942 season with the New York Giants, 1943 with the Giants and Jersey City Giants, 1944 with the Brooklyn Dodgers and Montreal Royals and 1945 with the St. Paul Saints. He did not go into the service.
Sunkel managed his hometown Paris Lakers from 1951 to 1954.
