Tom Hughes attended the University of Texas in 1928-29 (he was All-Conference in 1929) and then came up to the majors in September 1930 at age 22. He hit well, posting .373/.413/.508 in 59 at-bats.
A centerfielder, his range and fielding percentage were not as good as Liz Funk, who was the regular for the Tigers that year at the position. The next year Hub Walker was the regular.
