Tom Gorman graduated from Valley Stream, NY Central High School and went in the Navy. After his discharge from serving in the Pacific theater during World War II, he was signed by Jim Bergen for the New York Yankees in 1946 and began his professional career with Norfolk VA in the Class B Piedmont League in 1946 and 1947. He then played for Binghamton in the Class A Eastern League in 1948, Binghamton and Newark NJ in the Class AAA International League in 1949, the Kansas City Blues in the Class AAA American Association in 1950, and Beaumont in the Class AA Texas League in 1951. He started the 1952 season with Kansas City but was recalled by the Yankees in July and went on to pitch for them through the 1954 season.

His contract was sold to the Kansas City Athletics in spring training of 1955 and he pitched for them through 1959 for a total of 289 major league games. He had a career-high 18 saves for the Athletics in 1955. He pitched in the World Series for the Yankees in 1952 and 1953.
