Tom was one of five Delahanty brothers to play in the majors. He made his major league debut on the 1894 Philadelphia Phillies, his brother Ed's team.

In his last year in the majors, 1897, he played one game for the 1897 Louisville Colonels at second base. A month later, another young second baseman, Honus Wagner, made his debut with the Colonels, appearing in 9 games at second that season. Delahanty was two years older than Wagner.

In the minors, he played from 1894-1906, finishing up at Williamsport, and managed at Denver in 1903. He hit .350 for Denver in 1902.

Tom ran a fishing camp in Florida for the twenty years before his death at the age of 79.
