[edit] Biographical Information
According to Bill Lee's Baseball Necrology, Chaplin was killed at the "height" of his baseball career when a car in which he was a passenger hit a car that was stalled on the road south of National City. According to the New York Times/AP report (3/26/39), Chaplin and a female driver were returning from Tijuana. The Times reported that the driver sideswiped a parked car (although the death certificate says that the vehicle crashed into the rear of a parked car) and Chaplin was thrown into the windshield, which shattered and severed his jugular vein.
