 Biographical Information
Tim was picked by the Montréal Expos in the 18th round of the 1982 amateur draft out of high school but did not sign. He hit .338 as a freshman at Creighton then moved to Spokane Falls Community College for his sophomore year. He played for Canada in the 1983 Pan American Games and 1983 Intercontinental Cup. The Toronto Blue Jays chose him in the second round of the 1984 January secondary draft, two picks before Mike Jackson.
Tim split his first pro summer between the Medicine Hat Blue Jays (.292/.379/.387 in 31 G, splitting the catching job with Greg Myers) and Florence Blue Jays (4 for 29, 4 BB). In 1985, he played for the Kinston Blue Jays (.228/.234/.337 in 40 G) and Florence (9 for 36, 2B, 2 BB). He wrapped up in 1986 in a season split between Florence (.268/.340/.346 in 44 G), the Ventura County Gulls (0 for 3) and Knoxville Blue Jays (2 for 5, 2B, BB).
Overall, Rypien batted .254/.316/.334 in 142 minor league games, with 38 runs, 55 RBI, 7 home runs and 36 walks. He fielded .978 in 118 games at catcher, with 17 passed balls, and also saw a little action at 1B and one game at pitcher (3 unearned runs in two innings for Florence in 1986).
