Talk:Tony Kubek
From BR Bullpen
Tony Kubek was injured and replaced on the 1964 World Series roster by Mike Hegan. This is not in dispute. The 1965 Guide and all of the newspaper accounts confirm this. Chet Trail was a minor-league bonus player whose name did not appear anywhere until the 1970's. I hope this will put the matter to rest. (Ron Liebman) Please do not change this again. Be a man.
What I'm wondering is when this story came about (Trail replacing Kubek). A quick search finds that it's spread somewhat rapidly around the internet (wikipedia, Baseball Almanac, a couple other places). It's amazing no one researched it before. - --Mischa 12:42, 22 February 2007 (EST)
In 1964 teams had 24 man rosters with one bonus player counted as 25th man but allowed to stay in minors. Yankees felt Trail as not ready for major (he never made it) so they did not put him on the roster. Ford Frick ruled him eligible but he didn't attend the Series or get a World Series share. Original 24-man roster included Kubek for World Series, but he was scratched at last minute for Hegan (see NY time oct 6, 7, and 13, 1964 and 1964 bb Guide). Someone evidently submitted Trail in 1970's to elias, sporting news, and neft.
The March/April 2007 SABR Biographical Committee newsletter confirms Kubek's birth year as 1935. --Philippe 02:34, 4 May 2007 (EDT)
