Talk:Tim Murnane

From BR Bullpen

If the year of birth in the Bullpen differs from the year of birth at the main BR page, shouldn't we have some sort of short explanation in the article? (I'm assuming when Philippe is changing the dates, its coming from SABR.) --Jeff 12:27, 10 January 2008 (EST)

Sean gets the same SABR Bio updates Philippe does; he just sometimes takes a little longer to incorporate them. - --Mischa 12:40, 10 January 2008 (EST)

Correct. For more complex changes, I put in an explanation in the text, but most of these, it's the matter of SABR reseasrchers having found a birth or death certificate (or in this case a passport application) and correcting the information in the main database. These types of changes are consolidated in the bi-monthly biographical committee report, which I input here when I receive it. --Philippe 13:08, 10 January 2008 (EST)

Does anyone know where the assertion that Murnane was the first ballplayer to graduate from Holy Cross comes from? I fact-checked this, and have real questions about it. For one thing, there was another Timothy Murnane (Timothy F) who lived in Fitchburg, and he did attend Holy Cross-- the prep school, not the college. (I checked with Holy Cross's archivist). Our Tim Murnane was playing baseball in the years where various websites assert he graduated from Holy Cross, and there's no evidence he attended either the prep school or the university. I don't want to contradict the common wisdom, but I'd be grateful to know the evidence for saying our guy attended college. DevorahLeah 01:53, 21 December 2011 (EST)

Sounds like it could be a case of mistaken identity that this Murnane is listed as going to Holy Cross. Does anyone have the resources to research this? - --Mischa 11:24, 21 December 2011 (EST)

That is what I am trying to do. What else would you suggest, as I do have the resources. I have called the archivist at Holy Cross, for one thing, and he found the other guy, not ours. I have books and articles that say Murnane was playing baseball in Connecticut in 1869. I have old newspaper clippings that locate him in CT playing baseball in 1872... I am eager to help make this one more accurate, since I'm a media historian and want to do whatever I can to help. Please let me know where else I need to go to verify, but it certainly seems to be a case of mistaken identity. I just want to nail it down for you once and for all. I think you have enough reliable information to change our article. You may also wish to contact SABR, especially the college baseball committee and its president (you'll find the contact details through the SABR website). The committee can help to make the information you uncovered more widely known. Murnane is an important figure, so whatever is uncovered about him is of interest. --Philippe 01:40, 26 December 2011 (EST)
