I'm not sure that I agree with the "until the 1980's it was not unusual to see pitchers with seasonal shutout totals in the double figures" comment. There have been exactly 28 pitcher-seasons in baseball history with 10+ shutouts, and only 10 of those happened since the end of the Deadball Era. That includes 0 in the 1920s, 1 in the 1930s, 3 in the 1940s, 0 in the 1950s, 4 in the 1960s, 1 in the 1970s, and 1 in the 1980s. That's a median and mode of 1 per decade, which doesn't seem like "not unusual" to me. --Roger 11:05, 27 June 2006 (EDT)
