Talk:Schantz
From BR Bullpen
Has anybody any idea WHERE in the Netherlands this would have been? Sounds like a mistake by immigration officials to me--ThW5 02:38, 1 September 2008 (EDT)
Sounds like an error to me. Lots of sources list Wolters as being born in "Schantz" and there is no such place as far as I can tell. Someone at the SABR Biographical Committee should investigate this. - --Mischa 09:25, 1 September 2008 (EDT)
There is however a place in the Netherlands called Schanze in the local dialect (Neuschanz in German). Wolters is a name which sounds about right for people from that region. It's called "Nieuwe Schans" in Dutch, no positiveID yet, but it could be that one.--ThW5 02:49, 2 September 2008 (EDT)
Sounds like a good bet. Hope we can make a match and solve one of the many clear-cut errors in biographical listings for major leaguers. - --Mischa 09:26, 2 September 2008 (EDT)
Here is an extract from the July/August 2008 edition of the SABR Biographical Research Committee Report:
"Rynie Wolters was born in the Netherlands. We list his birthplace as Schantz; however, there are no cities with that name in the Netherlands. There are five different cities named Schans. Can anyone verify where he is from ?"
This blurb was prompted by our discussion of the matter on the BR Bullpen. Hopefully, one of SABR's crack researchers will get onn the case and resolve the issue. --Philippe 21:35, 8 September 2008 (EDT)
