The rule is incorrect. I'll fix that one of these days if someone doesn't beat me to it.--Philippe 07:52, 17 Dec 2005 (EST) There, it's corrected, with some additional background. --Philippe 09:36, 23 Dec 2005 (EST)

[edit] Blown save and save in a game by a single pitcher

The current page states, "Once a pitcher blows a save, he is no longer eligible to earn a save in that game." It would seem to me that a pitcher who blows a save but then switches defensive positions to, say, the outfield, would be eligible to switch positions back to pitcher in a save situation later on and finish the game off properly (provided he doesn't earn the win). Thus, the pitcher would have a blown save and a save in the same game. I haven't found a rule saying otherwise, so perhaps the sentence in this article should be re-worded? I'm not a huge baseball freak, so I wanted to check with the experts first. 67.169.69.193 17:52, 5 September 2011 (EDT)

Looking at the rules, you are right. A blown save is not an official statistic and is not mentioned in the rules; there is nothing that prevents earning a blown save and a win in the same appearance; the phrase above aims to point out that it is not normally possible to do do so with a save and a blown save. The scenario you describe is an exceptional one not explicitly covered in the rules. The rules do state however that each time the score is tied, the game game becomes a new one in terms of pitcher of record (including saves, which are an official statistic). So the offending pitcher's second appearance in the game would be counted as a new one, and if he meets the conditions for a save, he would be credited with a save. --Philippe 04:37, 6 September 2011 (EDT)
