Talk:Ron Santo
From BR Bullpen
There is no player in baseball history quite so deserving of the Hall of Fame... who isn't in it, that is. Santo's defensive brilliance is overshadowed by the dazzling defense of Brooks Robinson, and his offensive production is discarded as the product of hitting in a lineup that, for the largest part of his career, included HoFers Ernie Banks and Billy Williams. Consider this, however: the Career Batter-Fielder Wins of those three greats (the BFW value is derived mathematically, and measures how many games that player won or lost for his team, compared to what an exactly average player would have done) are as follows: Banks- 27.6, Williams 24.6, and Santo... 44.7.
Santo is, in my humble opinion, the most deserving player for the HOF who is not in. I think 3B is sort of overlooked, because you have to be good defensively, like a SS, and a good hitter, like a 1B or corner OF. Santo is probably the only player who would have to be ranked in the top 10 at his position who is not in the Hall (except for admitted gamblers). --Jeff 20:52, 27 February 2007 (EST)
For what position does Pete Rose rank in the top 10? Bill James has Ted Simmons as the #10 catcher and I think he clearly belongs too. Would Ken Boyer also be one of the top 10 third basemen? James has him 12th with Stan Hack 9th and Darrell Evans 10th. - --Mischa 20:56, 27 February 2007 (EST)
Clearly worthy candidates. Simmons, Boyer, and Evans would bring the HOF standards up not down. I'd put Santo in first. --Jeff 20:58, 27 February 2007 (EST)
Wasn't Graig Nettles a superior fielder to Santo? I think Aurelio Rodriguez was also better...
