Who "refuses" to come to the major leagues? --Just me 16:45, 22 August 2006 (EDT)
I've actually seen this a number of times. If a kid is hitting real well in his league, he may want to stay the season there where he's having such success. He may also feel that he would be outclassed at the major league level, especially if he's got teammates that have been at higher levels of play and told him what it's like up there. - Randy 17:53 22 August 2006 (EDT)
Nevertheless, the page doesn't state that he refused to go to the majors. It states that his contact was bought by the Boston Red Sox from the Oakland Oaks, while with the Stockton in 1955 and he did not want to go to the team's Montgomery affiliate. He then requested and received permission to stay with the California State League team through the end of the season. --MichaelEng 00:13, 23 August 2006 (EDT)
That scenario makes much more sense then what was written before --Just me 00:31, 23 August 2006 (EDT)
OK. It's better written your way. I didn't mean to imply that he was flouting authority. - Randy 13:48 23 August 2006 (EDT)
[edit] First Black Player Signed by the Red Sox?
"Pumpsie Green was the first black player signed by the Boston Red Sox..." I don't believe this statement to be an accurate fact.
From Baseball-Reference.com's page (Transactions section)[1] on Pumpsie: February 8, 1956: Purchased by the Boston Red Sox from Stockton (California).
From Baseball-Reference.com's page (Transactions section) [2] on Earl Wilson: May 11, 1953: Signed by the Boston Red Sox as an amateur free agent.
Pumpsie debuted on the field with the Red Sox on July 21, 1958[3]. Earl debuted on the field with the Red Sox on July 28, 1958[4], a week later.
Perhaps it should be changed to read: "Pumpsie Green was the first black player to play for the Boston Red Sox..."

I changed it. There was an internal inconsistency since the text farther down says that he was due to join Earl Wilson, another black player, in Montgomery. - Randy 16:39, 28 May 2010 (EDT)
