I have read that the LaLoosh character was loosely based on the real-life minor league pitcher Steve Dalkowski. The director of the movie had been a teammate of Dalkowski back in the early 1960s. It has been reported many times that Dalkowski was the fastest pitcher ever, minor leagues or major leagues. He was a left-hander with tremendous movement on his fastball, which reportedly used to rise as it came speeding toward the hitter.
