Talk:Notable Achievements

[edit] Rings
The line about championships won should read "Won x World Series with the Y-ville Zees" rather than "Won x World Series Rings with the Y-ville Zees". Rings were not given during the first few decades of the 20th century. See this article for a discussion about it: [1]. Although most readers would understand what is meant by how it is written now, it wouldn't be technically correct for anyone who won a series prior to 1932. It is my feeling that we should strive to be as technically correct as possible. Let me know if there is consensus on changing the line. If there is, I'll go through and try to correct as many as I can. Kinston eagle 09:41, 15 October 2007 (EDT)
- I've been researching this a little this morning and found out that they have been continuous since 1932, but some teams received rings prior to that. Prior to '32 some teams got rings, some got pins, some got watch fobs, some got cufflinks, etc... There was no tradition for rings specifically. It might be best for standardization to just leave out the word rings entirely. Kinston eagle 10:01, 15 October 2007 (EDT)
This discussion has taken place before. The rings have to be understood metaphorically, just like the word pennant. The terminology dates back to whoever started doing the Notable Achievement lists in the earliest days of the bullpen and has remained so ever since. --Philippe 11:13, 15 October 2007 (EDT)
Removing the term rings wouldn't hurt the notations, though, and would be more accurate. - --Mischa 13:02, 15 October 2007 (EDT)
If you can program a robot to do it... --Philippe 13:53, 15 October 2007 (EDT)
[edit] Olympic Medals
Can we get a consensus to add a line for people who have won Olympic medals? Orlando Hernández, for example, won a gold medal in 1992 with Cuba. Does anyone have an objection? 69.68.238.142 11:41, 18 August 2008 (EDT)
Fine by me. We have articles for probably over 100 Medal winners, even if you don't count the days it was a demonstration sport, so it will take time to add it in. What do others think? - --Mischa 12:23, 18 August 2008 (EDT)
The only issue I have is that Notable Achievements are MLB-centric, and most Olympic participants or medallists are not ML players, or marginal Major Leaguers. You'll get a lot of pages where the gold medal is the only achievement listed. --Philippe 10:05, 19 August 2008 (EDT)
The olympic medals would be the only NA that wasn't ML in nature. Might stick out. --Jeff 10:08, 19 August 2008 (EDT)
I thought minor league MVP awards are being listed under NA. - --Mischa 10:37, 19 August 2008 (EDT)
The difference is that minor league players are striving to reach MLB; Olympians - maybe, maybe not, but in a majority of cases they're on a different career path. --Philippe 14:43, 19 August 2008 (EDT)
