Talk:Leadoff hitter
From BR Bullpen
I edited the content a bit. Looking at old-time leadoff hitters, there was no obsession with speed and lots of slow, high-OBP guys hit leadoff. The low-OBP, high-SB leadoff hitter is a fairly modern concept and people mistakenly assume it always has been around when older managers were much smarter than present ones. - --Mischa 14:39, 20 August 2006 (EDT)
I remember a time in the 1960's when one of Willie Mays' managers used (or planned to use) him in the lead-off slot and the fans had a fit. Fans and sportswriters used to have much stronger opinions about who should bat where than they do now. - Randy 14:52 20 August 2006 (EDT)
Gene Mauch would alternate Brian Downing into the leadoff spot at times in the early '80's, and many thought it was very strange. But Downing could get on base. --Just me 19:35, 20 August 2006 (EDT)
