Garner never made the majors. Garner is one of a nameless, faceless many who struggle to make it after assured fame and fortune. After numerous major injuries (elbow, knee) he finally gave up his quest for the majors in 1998. It was about this same time (1998) that Garner also played on what was perhaps the best intramural softball team ever assembled, the Clown Punchers, a team made up mostly of law students from the University of Texas. Following his last game with the Clown Punchers, Garner assembled the team together and told them that of all the teams he'd ever played on, the Clown Punchers were "definitely the most recent."

Legend has it....after hitting his 81st career Northern League homerun for the Sioux Falls Canaries (giving him the Northern League record) Garner stepped on homeplate, quietly went to the lockeroom, dressed, and disappeared into the night without saying a word. Nobody, to this day, has any account of Garner.

The story seems apocryphal. SABR credits him with 80 Northern League HRs. --Jeff 19:21, 12 September 2008 (EDT)
