You saw Jeff Stone play for the Phillies in 1984 and figured he was one for the ages: blistering speed on the bases, way over .300 average in the high minors, and a .362 mark for the '84 major-league season. Stone was a kind of wild-looking little slip of a guy, impatient at the plate, very athletic. His reputation among writers and broadcasters was that he was not the brightest apple in the barrel, though who knows how true that is. He kept convincing major-league teams to take a shot at him for the rest of the decade in light of his obvious tools, but he usually descended again in a flurry of strikeouts. But he had his fifteen minutes ... A story out of the PR Winter League was after a few weeks there, his roomate walked into the living room where Jeff was preparing to take out the TV. His roomate asked what he was going to do with the TV and Jeff said, "I'm throwing this thing out, it plays nothing but spanish stations."
