Harvey was a regular .300 hitter, starting with his rookie season, coming from the Univ of Wisconsin. He hit off his front foot, which gave him control, but reduced his power. He hit doubles, not HRs. Played with the Tigers as a shortstop initially, was changed into an outfielder. Also did some stints at third base. As a rookie, he led in atbats, with 679.

He went to the Indians in a swap for Rocky Colavito, which meant Kuenn the batting champ was traded for Colavito, the home run champ. The Indian fans were mad, since Rocky was their hero.

Later, Kuenn played with some distinction with the Giants. Finally, he managed the Milwaukee Brewers to the pennant, a team known as "Harvey's Wallbangers." He had a leg amputation, and died young. Known for his chaw of chewing tobacco.

Elite batsmen? Career 108 OPS+ and only twice over 120? Sounds excessively high praise to me. - --Mischa 11:11, 24 August 2006 (EDT)

By the standards of the time, he was considered elite. OPS+ wasn't around in the 1950's. I've changed the text anyway. --Philippe 14:53, 24 August 2006 (EDT)
