In 1953, the Green Bay Blue Jays were a farm club of the Cleveland Indians. The manager was Phil Seghi. They played in the Class D Wisconsin State League. I remember two pitchers on the team -- Del Bastock and John Lang. They were two of the fastest pitchers in the league. Bastock led the league in strike-outs. The only other pitcher in the league who might have thrown with more velocity was lefthander Joe Burke of the Oshkosh Giants. That year I was also a pitcher for the Oshkosh Giants. ---Submitted by Bill O'Donnell

The Green Bay Blue Jays were part of the Class D Wisconsin State League and was one of the top teams in the league in 1953. Green Bay's manager was Phil Seghi. I remember the team as I also played in the league in 1953 as a pitcher for the Oshkosh Giants. I remember Green Bay as having two of the fastest pitchers in the league -- John Lang and Del Bastock. I believe Bastock led the league in strikeouts. Mel Heim was another pitcher and I recollect he may have led the league in E.R.A. I think, also, that Roy Nixon and Russ Nixon, identical twins, also played on the team. One of the Nixon twins went on to later play and manage in the major leagues. This was the last year the Wisconsin State League was in operation, as this was the year the Milwaukee Braves moved to Milwaukee from Boston. The Braves drew attendance away from the Wisconsin State League.

This is my personal remembrance. Bill O'Donnell
