Eddie Mathews was my boyhood hero growing up on Long Island in the 50's and 60's. I even went into Shea Stadium with a banner of appreciation of his hitting almost 500 home runs (at the time). My friend and I, who carried the banner, received both positive acknowledgement and many boos from the New Yorkers.
