I am 73 years old. When I was a kid (8 or 9) my father told me about a major league baseball player who lived on one of the floors of my dad's triple decker on Western Avenue in Cambrdge Massachusetts.

My father said he would see Eddie leave every spring with a suitcase and a baseball bat. He told me that Eddie Ainsmith was a catcher for the Washington Senators and that he caught the famous, Walter Johnson.

After all these years, this website has documented the veracity of dad's story.

Where do we get the information that he wore #14? They didn't have uniform numbers then. - --Mischa 21:29, 25 January 2007 (EST)

Now Batting, Number... The Mystique, Superstition, and Lore of Baseball's Uniform Numbers by Jack Looney (ISBN 1579125751) says he wore 14 in 1923 and 27 in 32 (coach). The Cardinals wore numbers on their sleeves in 1923, 1924, and 1932. --Just me 22:07, 25 January 2007 (EST)

Ah, so numbers on the back were the later innovation. I wasn't aware anyone ever had sleeve numbers. Neat. - --Mischa 09:20, 26 January 2007 (EST)
