Talk:Dwight Evans
From BR Bullpen
He was denied having his number retired by the Red Sox upon his retirement because he hadn't played his entire career with the team. He was then insulted by the Sox when they broke their own rule to retire Fisk's number. Something should be added about this, but I'm too bitter to be objective.
[edit] agree
I'm with you man. Evans has really gotten robbed of post-career recognition. I think he was a better player than about 25% of the hall of fame. I think he won on the field but lost the popularity contest off the field. That's why they call it the hall of "FAME". --Pti 11:53, 10 Oct 2005 (EDT)
[edit] Retiring Dewey's Uniform #24
I just want to take this opportunity to make a correction regarding why the Red Sox have not retired Dwight Evans' uniform #24. According to the Red Sox web site, the current policy states that a player must be enshrined in both the Red Sox Hall of Fame and the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.
While the policy under the Yawkey administration did state that a player must also have played their entire career in a Red Sox uniform (Evans played his final major league season with Baltimore in 1991), this was waved when Carlton Fisk's #27 was retired in 2000, because he had returned as a special assistant to then GM Dan Duquette. However, the current administration has not stated whether they plan on making any changes regarding the retiring of uniform numbers. Along with Yaz, Dewey IS my all-time favorite Red Sox player, and nowhere over the past seven years have I seen or read anything stating that he was "insulted" at the Red Sox for retiring Pudge's number, and not doing the same to his. If that were the case, Dewey wouldn't have returned to the Red Sox as the major league hitting coach in December 2001, and wouldn't continue working for the club today as a player development consultant. In any event, I hope that someday, the Red Sox will retire his uniform number, and bring some sense of closure to one of the greatest careers in Red Sox history.
