It seems like a fair number of college umps have US minor league experience. Is the level of umpiring quality in Division I higher than the low minors? - --Mischa 16:40, 22 April 2009 (EDT)
I think the reason is that umpiring in organized ball is quite a thankless process: you have to be promoted to the next level within a certain number of seasons, or you're fired. Umpires who washout of the lower minors have to go back to civilian life, but I guess that college ball offers another avenue to make some money from the skills they picked up while umpiring in the minors. --Philippe 18:53, 22 April 2009 (EDT)
