How can a guy be one of the best utility players when he only manned first base and the corner outfield slots? Doesn't sound too versatile to me. - --Mischa 11:26, 7 February 2007 (EST)

Maybe you wonder why he's called a good utility player because you never saw him play dipsh*t. There are not many players like Dave around anymore. He was always ready to do whatever he was called upon to do and was a class player who elevated those he played with by exhibiting integrity and a workmanlike ethic. He is one of my favorite Tigers ever, in case you couldn't tell. Check out one of his at bats in Toronto, which is one of the best at bats I have ever witnessed. I have smoked too much weed to remember what year, but if you're a stat nut - look it up. I don't give much of a sh*t about stats, but I know a good player when I see one. Dave was pure class.

Nope, I remember Bergman well. The question is not the quality of his play, but using the term "utility player". A utility player is someone like Jose Oquendo or Rob Mackowiak who can play multiple infield positions as well as the outfield. I almost never see the term "utility player" applied to a 1B/OF. - --Mischa 12:35, 21 June 2007 (EDT)
