Talk:Dale Jones
From BR Bullpen
This says Dale Jones played baseball for Wayne State in Nebraska from 1937 to 1941 while the Sporting News reported on March 21, 1940 page 3 that he was signed by scout Wish Egan for the Tigers from a Detroit High School in 1937 and began playing professionally in 1938. Which is correct?

Jones began playing professionally in 1938. His minor league career was 1938-1941 and 1946-1947. IIRC, players could appear both in college and in the minors at the same time back then. - --Mischa 14:24, 13 April 2008 (EDT)
What does IIRC mean? The article in TSN was written in 1940 and I wonder why they did not report that he had played for a college in Nebraska at the same time he was playing professional baseball in 1938 for Harlingen, and in 1939 for Lake Charles. How is it known that he played for the college in Nebraska and that college players back then could play professionally at the same time?
I couldn't find any info in the Wayne State Media Guide. Its possible he attended, but didn't play. (IIRC - If I Recall Correctly). I don't think a player could play in the minors and retain college eligibility, but it was common for players to play in the minors under an alias to protect their college status. --Jeff 13:17, 15 April 2008 (EDT)
