Talk:Casey Wise
From BR Bullpen
His obit in the 2008 Almanac says his father Hugh Wise was a scout and ran the Braves' minor league camp. Is this Hughie Wise? and/or Is this Hugh Wise who managed in the minors in the 30s and 40s? --Jeff 12:54, 18 January 2008 (EST)
Doyle lists Hughie Wise as playing with Owensboro from 1936-1941, so that Hugh is Hughie. He also has a Hugh Wise who played from 1953-1956, who would not fit the bill. I'll try to find Hughie's obit. - --Mischa 12:59, 18 January 2008 (EST)
Can't find an obit for Hughie. A google search for "Casey Wise" and "Hughie Wise" or "Hugh Wise" doesn't bring up much. Could someone check with the Braves? - --Mischa 13:02, 18 January 2008 (EST)
There was a Hugh Wise managing Eau Claire in 1947 - a Braves' affiliate. Is this all the same guy? --Jeff 13:03, 18 January 2008 (EST)
Doyle has Wise's last year as a player as 1946. Could be the same guy very feasibly. - --Mischa 13:07, 18 January 2008 (EST)
Paperofrecord.com wasn't much help. I found an article in Nov 1957 about the Braves' acquisition of Casey. It says his father Hugh is a scout for the team and a brother Hugh Jr. played several seasons in the systems, but doesn't identify Hugh as the Hughie or not. --Jeff 13:19, 18 January 2008 (EST)
My best guess is it's the same guy as scouts tend to have played ball but I have no way of confirming. - --Mischa 13:21, 18 January 2008 (EST)
Exactly what I was thinking --Jeff 14:30, 18 January 2008 (EST)
Ha! Found it in his obit in the August 17, 1987 TSN. It is all the same guy. --Jeff 21:35, 18 January 2008 (EST)
Should we notify Sean so he links the main BR pages as he has done with other family combinations? - --Mischa 19:13, 19 January 2008 (EST)
I think so. --Jeff 22:05, 19 January 2008 (EST)
Are you going to email him or should I? - --Mischa 10:39, 20 January 2008 (EST)
