Cal Koonce was my high school teacher. He taught Civics and PE at South View Senior High School located in Hope Mills, North Carolina. I had him in 1977 and again in 1979. He was a great person. He had leukemia. That is how he died. He was a major player in getting little league baseball started in my hometown. After his death we built a bicycle path and dedicated to him as well as the main baseball park. Back in 1960's when I was just a young child I went to visit my grandparents in Boston. We went to see a game in Fenway Park and Cal Koonce was pitching that day. During the game my mom sent a note to the dugout telling him there was a family from Hope Mills at the game. Cal sent the note back asking us to come visit him after the game. Many year later a siblling and I had him and his wife as teachers, both in elementary and high school.
