Quarles is said to have pitched for Roanoke in 1888-89. There doesn't seem to have been a minor league team there at the time, so it could have been at Roanoke College, or it could have been an amateur team. As of 2006, SABR was trying to pin down if/when Quarles had been at college since apparently news accounts had said he was a college man. I don't know if the archives at Roanoke College have been checked. - Randy 17:14, 17 April 2009 (EDT)
