Talk:Baseball Register
From BR Bullpen
Doesn't seem to be published in 2008. Anyone know why? -24.160.240.52 22:21, 29 March 2008 (EDT)
It was stopped after the 2006 edition.
Which Sporting News annual contains better biographical information - the Register or the Guide? I'm having a hard time differentiating them based soley on description. I'm looking for biographical type anecdotes (beyond birth date, birth place, height, weight, etc). For the sake of reference, I'm looking for player capsules that are descriptive like the ones from Zander Hollander in the "Complete Handbook of Baseball" series. Any idea which book provides that kind of information? Thanks, Randy
Neither really. The Guides list the statistics for every player (ML and minors) from the previous year. The Registers list all the stats for the ML (and some minor leaguers on 40 man rosters) for their entire careers. The Registers will list family members and schools attended. --Jeff 17:48, 27 April 2009 (EDT)
Some of the earlier Registers (until the early 1970s) included pictures of the players, and career statistics by managers, coaches, and players recently elected to the Hall of Fame. The Guides, in addition to complete major league and minor league statistics from the previous season (although these don't include independent leagues), also include articles re-capping the previous season, summaries of post-season series and games, a few pictures (including some full-page color pictures certain years), a list of remarkable achievements in the previous season (multi-hit and multi-homer games, pinch hitting statistics) and all-time award winners. --Philippe 18:53, 27 April 2009 (EDT)
I appreciate the feedback. Can anyone recommend annual books or magazines (beyond the yearbooks published by each club) fromt the 1960s to 1980s that contain the biographical tidbits that I'm interested in? Thanks, Randy 5/6/09 3:25 PM EDT
