Gary Garland sent me a list of about 75 Japanese players to die during World War II. I will work on adding these over time. He is also going to work on a separate list of WWII veterans in general. - --Mischa 12:37, 16 Jun 2006 (EDT)

Mischa, can you compare your list to the one below to see if there are any players missing on either list:

This is a list of drafted players/players who fought in a war/or somehow involved in the military from text-searching JapanBaseballDaily: Kazuto Tsuruoka,Kazuo Kito,Osamu Tsutsui,Taju Hitokoto,Masaaki Noguchi,Riichi Matsumoto,Yutaka Ishii,Noboru Kitahara,Eikichi Nagamochi,Victor Starfin,Noboru Noguchi,Tetsuharu Kawakami,Tadashi Ueda,Masakazu (Seiichi?) Kito,Hiroshi Oshita,Shojiro Namba,Kaoru Betto,Teiichi Kinoshita,Yonekichi Naya,Kano Omoda,Keiichiro Masuyama,Torao Hiruki,Toichiro Sobue,Isamu Fujii,Kenjiro Matsuki,Shuichi Hirose,Taju Hitokoto,Shinichi Ishimaru,Hiroshi Kuroiwa,Isao Odate,Noboru Aota,Tamotsu Uchibori,Makoto Kozuru,Rikuo Nemoto,Phillips Steere Paine,Shoichi Aoki,Kichiharu Tosauchi,Marion O'Neil,Charlie Hood,Fumio Fujimura,Kenichi Aoshiba,Al Long,Leo Patrick Kiely,Satoshi Hirayama --MichaelEng 18:58, 16 Jun 2006 (EDT)

The list Gary sent me includes Yukio Eguchi, the spring 1938 SB leader. I've checked 21 names so far and will try to get to the rest later today. - --Mischa 07:47, 18 Jun 2006 (EDT)

Hmm, thats odd. Eguchi (江口 行雄) isn't listed on the Hall of Fame's cenotaph Japanese/English nor at this page which lists player stats. At this page he is listed as "戦争で身体を壊し、戦後病死。" which I have translated as "suffered injuries during the war and died after the war due to illness." --MichaelEng 10:22, 18 Jun 2006 (EDT)

Sounds like he meets the criteria for players who died as a result of the war. Three other players Gary has who aren't on the list are Shoichi Kikuya, Masao Mita, Takeo Tabe and Hatsuichi Kajiue, but his list includes some pre-league-era players and I can't find either of them at JBD. Through #50 on the list. - --Mischa 10:44, 18 Jun 2006 (EDT)

Some info on them:

  • Shoichi Kikuya or Shouichi Kikuya (菊谷 正一) - played at Rikkyo; apparently one of the school's all-time pitching greats, top batter in the 1932 Fall season; never on a league team
  • Takeo Tabe (田部 武雄) - Hall of Famer, played for Giants on 1935 tour of America; never on a league team
  • Masao Mita - same as Masao Santa (三田 政夫)
  • Hatsuichi Kajiue (梶上かじうえ 初一) - Keio's captain in 1931; never on a league team

How should they be categorized? College Stars for Kikuya and Kajiue or should a new category ([[:Category:Amateur Player]], [[:Category:Japanese Pre-League Player]] or something else) be added? Another possible duplicate is Masao Nakamoto who is the same as Iwao Masano (政野 岩夫). --MichaelEng 08:06, 20 June 2006 (EDT)

College star works for Kikuya. If Kajiue is not a college star, he can at least go under the veterans categories. Tabe can get the JHoF and veteran categories. - --Mischa 12:46, 22 June 2006 (EDT)

The only other player on Gary's list not on yours was a Kumiy??snipped the end here accidentally? Yajima. - --Mischa 17:49, 28 June 2006 (EDT)

Kumeyasu Yajima (矢島 粂安) - played for the Giants in 1935 on their tour, was #2, an infielder, later changed his last name to Shigehara, went to Matsumoto Shogyo then Waseda then Tokyo Club and All-Nippon (1934 MLB Tour), played at Koshien (1926) - hit a goodbye grand slam (a Koshein first) at Spring Koshien to beat Takamatsu Shogyo 5-2, nicknamed the "Babe Ruth of Shinshuu" did not play in the league, death from disease contracted at the front. --MichaelEng 19:30, 29 June 2006 (EDT)

Japanbaseballdaily.com lists Yukio Muramatsu as dying in combat in Guam. Here it says an airplane accident in training. Which is correct? - --Mischa 12:35, 7 August 2006 (EDT)

Japanbaseballdaily.com lists Norihisa Kawamura, not Tokuhisa. Same guy? Which name is more "correct"? - --Mischa 12:31, 30 August 2006 (EDT)

Same guy, according to the HoF list his given name's furigana wasとくひさ (Tokuhisa). His given name's kanji (徳久) could also be read as Norihisa. --MichaelEng 01:05, 6 September 2006 (EDT)
