"The Red Sox placed two members on the 1997 Topps Rookie All-Star team announced yesterday, with shortstop Nomar Garciaparra and catcher Scott Hatteberg named.
Garciaparra, who was the unanimous choice for American League Rookie of the Year Monday, set several club and league records in his first season. He hit .306 with 30 homers and 98 RBI.
Hatteberg, who overtook Bill Haselman as the Sox' starting catcher in midseason, hit .277 with 10 homers and 44 RBI in 114 games. The team was selected by major league managers and coaches.
The Red Sox were one of only two teams to place two players on the squad. The other was the Anaheim Angels with right-handed pitcher Jason Dickson and left-hander Mike Holtz.
Other selections: outfielders Jose Cruz Jr. of the Toronto Blue Jays, Jose Guillen of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Andruw Jones of the Atlanta Braves; third baseman Scott Rolen of the Philadelphia Phillies, second baseman Wilton Guerrero of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and first baseman Dimitri Young of the St. Louis Cardinals."
