- Was the catcher on the 1964 University of Maine team that won 3 games in the College World Series.
- Selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 23rd round of the 1965 amateur draft (June), the Baltimore Orioles in the 2nd Round (26th overall) of the 1966 amateur draft (January), and finally the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2nd round in June 1966.
- Assistant Coach for the University of Maine during the 1976 season, and trip to the College World Series.
- 1st base coach for Yankees when Yogi Berra was manager in 1985 but replaced when Billy Martin took over.
- Merrill was a rather successful minor league manager, winning 5 league titles, and finishing with the best record in the league his first five years and six of his first seven (with a second place the other year).
In 2009 he was elected to the International League Hall of Fame.
