Infielder Steve McFarland played in the Pittsburgh Pirates orgnization from 1968 to 1972, reaching as high as the AA Eastern League in his last season.
McFarlandwas then an assistant coach at his alma mater until 1983 before becoming the head baseball coach at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo from 1984 to 1993.
McFarland moved to the pro ranks as a scout for the Florida Marlins from 1994 to 1998. He also managed the Utica Blue Marlins in 1996. McFarland has been in the Chicago Cubs organization since 1999. He spent 1999 as a coach for the Lansing Lugnuts before managing from 2000 to 2006. McFarland has been a scout for the Cubs since 2005.
