Steve Lombardozzi was at the University of Florida at the same time as pitchers Rob Murphy a nd Randy O'Neal. He was signed as a ninth round pick in the 1981 amateur draft by the Twins and scout Fred Waters.
Lombardozzi came up to the majors in 1985 and hit .370 in 54 at-bats. He was the starting second baseman for the Minnesota Twins for several years, and also played for the Houston Astros. In the 1987 World Series, he hit .412 and slugged .647.
Lombardozzi's brother, Chris Lombardozzi, was a minor league infielder 1985-1990. His son, Stephen Lombardozzi, is in the minor league system of the Washington Nationals and hit 34 points above his league's average in 2008.
