[edit] Biographical Information
Outfielder Steve Evans was an above-average hitter in the National League and then a star as a hitter in the short-lived Federal League.
His specialty was hit-by-pitch, and he also had a reputation as a flake.
SABR has a biography of him. He broke into the minors in 1907 and was discovered there by Dan Brouthers, who at the time was a scout for the New York Giants.
After his major league days he again played in the minors, retiring after a good 1917 year. He worked for the state of Ohio after his baseball days.
His career is tied with that of Roger Bresnahan, with whom he played in both New York and St. Louis.
