Stephen Sabo

Biographical Information[edit]

Stephen Sabo signed with Budapest United in the Hungarian Baseball League for 1993, serving as player-manager, and became co-coach of the Hungarian national team. He drew attention in 1995 when he was a replacement player for the Philadelphia Phillies during the strike. In 1996, he moved to play for Vindija in Croatia (his father was born in part of Hungary that later became Croatia).

He served as a backup for the Croatian national team in the 2001 European Championship, going 0 for 3 with a walk and getting one assist in the field. In his first game, he pitched, relieving Ivica Anic in the 7th of a 14-0 mercy rule loss to the French national team and allowed one hit and got one out. He replaced Tomislav Curkovic in CF late in a 8-1 loss to Italy and was retired by Marc Cerbone. He saw his most action in the 7th/8th place game, a 10-4 loss to Germany. He pinch-hit for Oliver Knolmajer and stayed in at 3B (Knolmajer had been at 2B; other infielders shuffled around). He was 0 for 2 with a walk before being replaced by Marko Pavlakovic.
