After the 2005 season, the New Jersey Cardinals relocated to State College, Pennsylvania and became known as the State College Spikes. The team spent its inaugural year as a St. Louis Cardinals affiliate, going 39-36 with Mark DeJohn as the club's first manager. In 2007, the Spikes became a Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate.

The Spikes' home ballpark is Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
