[edit] Biographical Information
Stan Benjamin played five seasons in the majors, and was a regular for the 1941 Philadelphia Phillies.
Stan was born in Framingham, MA and attended Framingham High School. He was at Western Maryland College (known as McDaniel College later) in 1936. Stan played 10 seasons in the minors, almost always hitting over .300. Late in his minor league career, he did some pitching, appearing in 25 games as a hurler.
After his playing career, Stan worked for two seasons as a minor league manager, first with the Nazareth Cement Dusters in 1946 and then with the Fresno Cardinals in 1948.
Offered a teaching and coaching position at Greenfield, MA high school at the end of the 1948 season, and given 48 hours to report, he made it cross-country from Fresno, CA to Massachusetts with his family in time to start the job. He was Greenfield's baseball coach from 1948 until 1964 and its football coach from 1958 to 1964. He gave up his coaching duties to begin work as the New England region scout for the Houston Astros in 1965, and became a full-time scout in 1975 when he retired from teaching.
He recommended the 1990 trade that brought Jeff Bagwell to the Houston organization in return for relief pitcher Larry Anderson. He retired from scouting in 2002.
