Outfielder Stan Hollmig was signed off the campus of Texas A&M University by the Philadelphia Phillies for $25,000 before the 1948 season. Stan was an all-around athlete as an Aggie playing baseball, basketball and football. In 1948 Stan hit .303 with eleven home runs in his first pro season with the Wilmington Blue Rocks of the Interstate League. The Phillies placed him on their 40-man big league roster to protect him from being drafted by other teams.
The 23-year-old got his taste of the major leagues probably sooner than expected playing with the Phillies in 1949 where the rookie appeared in 81 games and hit .255. Hollmig was with the Phillies in 1950 but appeared in only eleven games early and did not figure in the "Whiz Kids" miracle run for the National League pennant. He appeared in only two games for the Phillies in 1951 and ended his major league run hitting .253 in 94 games. Stan's major league career came quick and ended soon.
1952 would find Stan with the Schenectady Blue Jays of the Eastern League where he hit .290 and had eight homers. Hollmig continued his career in the the American Association, Texas League and Southern Association having a good year with the San Antonio Missions in 1955, hitting .285 with 21 four-baggers in 139 games and in 1956 Stan hit at a .295 clip with 12 homers in 121 games for the Missions. With the Nashville Volunteers in 1957 he had a .329 batting average with eight homers and would close out his minor league career in 1958 with San Antonio, hitting .276.
With nine seasons under his belt and 32 birthdays past, Stan opted for retirement from active playing in the game. He ended his minor league run with a .289 batting average with 93 home runs while playing 880 games. Hollmig then became a long-time scout for the Cincinnati Reds and later the Houston Astros. Hollmig died on December 4, 1981, at age 55 in San Antonio, TX.
