St. Louis is the largest city in the state of Missouri, located in its eastern part, on the Mississippi River, across from the state of Illinois and the city of East St. Louis, IL. Its chief rival in the state, Kansas City, MO, is located 250 miles to the west, on the border with Kansas. At its apogee around the turn of the 20th century, St. Louis was the 6th largest city in the United States, although it has fallen considerably since that time. It is a long-standing hotbed of baseball, hosting a team in the National Association and in the debut season of the National League. From 1902 to 1953, St. Louis had teams in both the American and National leagues.

St. Louis is the home of Saint Louis University. Over 250 players were born here, including Hall of Famers Yogi Berra, Pud Galvin and Dick Williams.
