The son of Rudy Arroyo and brother of Jack Arroyo, Spencer Arroyo made his pro debut in 2008. He went 7-2 with a 3.72 ERA as a college freshman and improved to 4-2, 2.22 as a sophomore, earning first-team All-Conference honors. The Philadelphia Phillies picked him in the 31st round of the 2008 amateur draft and he signed. He was sent to the Williamsport Crosscutters and went just 0-2 with a 9.28 ERA and 1.97 WHIP, saving one game in 4 appearances. He was demoted to the GCL Phillies and went 0-2 with a 4.26 ERA in 9 games; he walked 5 and struck out 25 in 31 2/3 IP.
