The Sioux City Explorers began play in the Northern League in 1993, the independent circuit's inaugural season. In 2006, the club moved to the new American Association. For their entire existence, the team has called Lewis & Clark Park home.

Some of the most notable Explorers players have included future big leaguers Julius Matos, Nate Bland, Nate Field, and Mike Porzio. Former major leaguers Oil Can Boyd, Joe Kraemer, Gerald Young, Carl Nichols, Cris Colon, and Desi Wilson have also played for the club over the years.
