In July, 2009, SFU was approved as the first non-american school to compete in the NCAA. The school will compete in Division-II in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference starting in 2011-2012. SFU does not compete in baseball, but the announcement prompted the University of British Columbia, which does compete in baseball, to explore the same transition.
