Silver Slugger Award

The Silver Slugger Award, formally called the Hillerich & Bradsby Silver Slugger Award is an award given to the best hitter at each position in both the National League and the American League. It is awarded by Hillerich & Bradsby, the makers of the Louisville Slugger. The Awards were first attributed in 1980.

There are nine awards given per league each year: one for each of first base, second base, third base, shortstop and catcher, and three for outfielders (like the Gold Glove awards, the Silver Slugger awards for outfielders are given without consideration as to whether the outfielder played left, right or center field). The ninth award in the National League is given to the best-hitting pitcher; in the American League, it is for the best designated hitter. Managers and coaches vote for the award and are not allowed to vote for a player on their own team.
