Regarded as one of the best handlers of pitchers of his time, catcher Frank "Silver" Flint played in the majors for more than a decade, mostly for the Chicago White Stockings.
Born in Philadelphia, Flint moved to St. Louis as a boy and played amateur ball there. At age 19, he was the regular catcher for the St. Louis Red Stockings of the National Association in 1875. He then played for Covington and Indianapolis in the minors. The Indianapolis Blues joined the National League in 1878, and he remained their regular backstop.
Flint was acquired by the White Stockings for the 1879 White Stockings and played 11 seasons with the club. During his tenure with the club, he handled legendary hurlers John Clarkson, Larry Corcoran, Fred Goldsmith, and Jim McCormick. He also briefly managed the team in his first season with them.
After baseball, Flint ran a bar in Chicago. He died of consumption at age 36.
