While attending New Hanover High School in Wilmington, North Carolina, first baseman Shawn Gallagher hit safely in 51 straight games, tying the prep mark set by Stan Brown of Noblesville, Indiana. Gallagher was then selected by the Texas Rangers in the fifth round of the 1995 amateur draft.
After playing several years in the minors, Gallagher left professional baseball in 2001 to pursue a degree in Nuclear Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
