Shaun Howitt is the brother of Dann Howitt. Out of high school, he was picked by the Detroit Tigers in the 42nd round of the 1968 amateur draft but did not sign. After college, he was taken by the Kansas City Royals in the ninth round of the 1972 amateur draft.
He debuted with the 1972 San Jose Bees as a part-time outfielder and hit .257/~.379/.331 in 53 games. In 17 games for the 1973 Bees, he batted .146/~.255/.268.
